Tyres Ain't Tyres

2007-09-04
Due to the AKA's recent announcement with the rotax class and tyres, we have encounted some confusion concerning the issue. So we thought that it was worthwhile looking into the tyre subject a little further.

All tyres work well when they are new. The stickier compound tyres like the MG, usually last from around one to three meetings, and then are thrown away. Longer life tyres, like the Bridgestone, last a little longer and as such will require storage between meetings. If not done properly, performance will fall off alarmingly.  Tyres must be kept out of the sun and must not be overheated either on or off the track. Overheating your tyres will boil off the "plasticisers" and the tyres will go hard.

Tyre Tips

The tyres on your kart, like your motor vehicle, play a vital role in the performance, handling and safety of your kart.  Your tyres, may fail in use as a result of punctures, impact damage, improper inflation, overloading or other conditions resulting from misuse.

Before anything else can be evaluated, make sure your tyres are in good condition. Erratic handling conditions on your kart will not disappear no matter what you do if you your tyres are old and hard. Tyre pressure also has a bearing on your karts handling. So make sure you have the recommened tyre pressure in your tyres. It is also important that both front tyres are the same circumference, and likewise the rear.

Tyres should be cleaned of dirt and debris every time you come in off the track. Do not allow a kart with hot tyres to sit on the ground for too long, or flat spots may develop. This will then take some getting rid of next time you go out on the track.

Tyres do not wear evenly. Remember this! Obviously the outside tyres will wear more than those on the inside, but what is not so obvious is that the inside of the tyre gets hotter than the outside and will "go off"more.

Tyres on race day - what you do with your tyres on race day can mean the difference between winning and losing. You need to be able to read the conditions of the day and know that your tyres will change between races. Typical conditions you will need to take into account include, driver kart chassis, track layout, track surface, temperature, humidity and whether it is wet or dry.
