Karting Today

2008-06-14
Karting Today

Karting today is now recognised as the entry level
to motorsport for aspiring racing drivers and the
breeding ground for future World Champions.

Fast and furious competition sees karts, typically
powered by 80, 100 or 125cc two-stroke engines,
capable of speeds of up to 180kph with acceleration
faster than a Ferrari sports car.

Competitors can start at 7 years old.

Karting, open to both male and female competitors, is arguably the least expensive form of motor racing. All Australian and international Kart racing is licensed by the CIK (Controlled International Karting), part of the FIA, the same administration body for Formula 1 and all international motor-racing.

Kart Circuits are licensed for competition by the individual national bodies to an agreed minimum specification. In Australia, karting is governed by the Australian Karting Association or AKA. Kart licences are graded A, B, C or D. Grade A is for world championships, the pinnacle of kart racing.

The majority of Formula One racing drivers have cut their teeth in Karting which is acknowledged as the grass roots of all motorsport and essential to the development of young drivers and engineers. It is one of the world's fastest-growing sports. Satellite, cable and terrestrial channels air top international events and the sport has many dedicated monthly magazines throughout the Australia and the world.

As in all aspects of Australian motorsports, Karting is undergoing a steep growth curve. With the explosion of interest in the sport recently, it has now been recognised of the importance of establishing a strong karting presence in this country, necessary to train the country's future stars of tomorrow as they climb up through the ranks of competitive racing.

The kart's simple design, emphasis on driver control and the rewards of a smooth driving style will all contribute to putting young Australian's in a situation where they can learn to compete amongst Australia's best racers.

Karting is able to give our young drivers their first anticipation of the start of a race, that perfect start, finding that perfect line through the corner as they clip the apex, powering through the corners. Creating overtaking maneuvers through drafting and sling shotting, out-braking your opponents, the thrill of flashing past the checkered flag, it's all there in Karting.

Karting today is an indescribable feeling, the driver being one with the kart and the spine-tingling sensations of speed and control to experience.

In the long road to World Championships, the green flag starts in Karting!
